A friend had a roommate who smoked when she pooped, in their apartment. When my friend asked her why, the roommate said she thought it hid the smell, like lighting a match or whatever.

Can't say why it's so common in public restrooms, but I've noticed Chinese people would usually prefer to be inside unless the temperature is perfect and there is shade. Especially in an office, a lot of people will sit in the stall and play phone games and just be alone for a while. It's the best place to take a break without getting called out for it, or at least the least visible with the most plausible deniability.

Why not flush it? You're not even supposed to flush toilet paper made for toilets in most public restrooms, nevermind a gob of cigarette butts.

我也不知道人们为什么喜欢在公共厕所里抽烟，但是我注意到中国人喜欢待在里面。特别是在办公室里，很多人喜欢坐在马桶上玩手机，独处一会儿。这是最好的休息场所，不会被人打扰。

为什么不把烟头冲掉？中国的大部分公厕里人们甚至都不把厕纸冲在马桶里，更别提烟头了。

I don't know if this needs to be over analysed. Chinese like to smoke. You have spare time to smoke when you are sitting squatting on the toilet over the hole comfortably. You then smoke. I mean, I would do too if I was smoking. Now it's only the phone, I can't poop without the phone.

I never tried doin it. I did the squat like 5-10 times over my time in China but it's always been absolute emergencies, so not really a phone time.

I always flush toilet paper. Disgusting not to. Not my problem if they don't know how to properly plumb a building.

Meh. I've been flushing in my apartment for two years, not a single clog. Maybe the locals just enjoy the smell of shit wafting from the rubbish bin and use the plumbing as an excuse. Given the condition of bathrooms here, it wouldn't be surprising.

Your apartment has better, more modern plumbing then. All 3 places I've lived in China have been able to handle it too. Some older places really can't handle it though. I don't like taking that risk when shitting outside the comfort of my own bog.

I know a few restaurants not far from there that also act as very good laxatives, maybe I'll invite them to have a try and they won't need the cigarettes anymore Also seriously, who ever needs laxatives in China?

I certainly wouldn't begrudge anyone for not wanting their bathroom to smell like an ashtray, but the premise of this question here's kinda silly. It'd be like asking "what's up with all these Americans smoking weed at concerts?"

It’s a nasty habit and I detest it, but going outside anytime from April to October in Guangzhou will result in you melting. I wouldn’t smoke outside either.

Pro-tip= if somebody is talking on the phone and pooping at the same time, yell “he’s pooping and talking to you” over and over in Chinese, problem solved.

You just have to think of Chinese adults as being like US or UK teenagers: spitting and smoking, hanging off the straps on the subway, jumping queues, red lights, just teenagers.

Makes the bathroom smell better. When I was an exchange student in Zhengzhou during HS, I was so happy when my classmates smoked in the bathroom. It was the only way it was bearable because damn it reeked in there. Granted they would for sure flush the evidence once it was done.
